Who is responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet?
Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare about two lovers from two rival families in Verona, Italy. “Two households...In fair Verona where we lay our scene”. A major component of the play is how both lovers die together due to suicide; however it is unclear who caused the problems that ultimately led to their deaths. I will be concentrating on many characters that may have been responsible for deaths of the “star crossed lovers”. Firstly, I will concentrate on Friar Lawrence, a religious man and an advisor to both Romeo and Juliet. Friar Lawrence was not in favour of either of the two houses and was friendly with them equally, however he believed he could make them friends, “For this alliance may so happy prove, to turn your households rancour to pure love”. The Friar plays a large role in their deaths. In secret, he marries the couple which is the start of the tragedy, from here on everything begins to turn sour. The Friar gives Juliet a potion which is designed to make her look deceased so that she can run away and live with Romeo. Stupidly, the Friar himself does not deliver this message to Romeo, which ultimately caused both their deaths. He was relying on another Friar to deliver the message for him, and does not think to check if the message was delivered. Furthermore, Friar Lawrence acted as a coward, at the point when Juliet needs the Friar’s help the most he runs away leaving her to kill herself. If the Friar was with Juliet she would not have had the opportunity to kill herself! His appalling decisions and ideas undoubtedly doomed both Romeo and Juliet. Secondly, the man who was meant to deliver the message, Friar John. It was his responsibility to deliver a message that meant life or death!
